Gorgon Gas HDD Shore Crossing – HDD Engineering, QC Inspection and Project Management

Client: Chevron Australia / JP Kenny and Technip Joint Venture

Services Provided: Engineering services, Client HDD Advisors and Project Management support

Completion Date: May 2012

Scope of Work:

The Gorgon Project’s shore crossing connects the upstream facilities to the onshore infrastructure on Barrow Island, off the coast of northern Western Australia. Barrow Island and its environs is a Class “A” nature reserve and as such the Gorgon Project is subject to strict environmental controls. The project scope of works included:

  • Site establishment, pipeline stringing and insertion of nine lines supported by an offshore marine spread to a target laydown 400m beyond the hole exit point.
  • HDD of nine, 490m long boreholes.
  • Casing Installation via HDD Rig Insertion of 2x 18” Cased umbilical holes and 18” Cased Water Winning hole.
  • Pipeline installation by thrusting of 2x 34” Flow lines, 2x 10” MEG lines and 2x 8” Utility lines.

Stockton Drilling Services provided specialist HDD engineering services for the Gorgon Gas Project from the commencement of Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) in 2005 to the successful installation of the crossings in 2012. The challenges that were met were substantial and these included remote island location, stringent quarantine and environmental requirements, no availability of fresh water, potentially cavernous karst formation, and high energy and exposed marine environment.

During the design phase, we were involved in the following as an integral part of the design team:

  • Route selection,
  • Evaluation of alternative construction methodologies,
  • Planning and execution of geological investigations,
  • Geological interpretive report,
  • Crossing design,
  • Drilling fluid management study,
  • Cementing study,
  • Risk and environmental assessments,
  • Development of contract documentation including drawings, scope and specification, and
  • Tender evaluation.

During the construction phase, Stockton Drilling Services provided QC Inspection and project management support. The primary role of the Inspectors / Advisors was to ensure that the project was executed as planned and in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Charles Stockton acted as Principal Shore Approach Specialist during the engineering phase and then transitioned to Site Construction Manager during execution.

Results and Client Benefit:

Stockton’s were instrumental in the successful completion of this highly challenging project.
